People: architect, Caldwell & Associates, Pensacola; structural engineer, Joe DeReuil Associates, Pensacola; general contractor, Greenhut Construction, Pensacola; steel fabricator, Bell Steel Co., Pensacola; and steel erector, Ed Emmons Steel Erectors, Pensacola
Products: Nucor Vulcraft Group, Fort Payna, Ala., supplied the joist and deck, which consisted of 20 1/2 tons of joist materials; 66,000 square feet of 3-inch, 20-gauge, galvanized composite type deck; and 20,000 square feet of 1 1/2-inch, 20-gauge, galvanized roof deck.
Fine Points: To make the 4-floor, box-shaped building appear as big as possible, the architects connected the building to office and conference rooms that are housed in an elevated egg-shaped structure with glass walls and an aluminum frame so cars can travel underneath. The tallest part of the egg is a 70-foot concrete stairwell that consists of stucco, concrete and curtainwall glass. A template was constructed to show where the roof line would meet the top of the glass. Crews used the same template for each vertical mullion so the heights of new mullions could be established while keeping the same reveal on the fascia for the roof. The composite deck and a slab at the roof help support large rooftop units or the possible addition of another floor.
