Butler Manufacturing’s headquarters in Kansas City, Mo., received Energy Star certification from the Washington, D.C.-based Environmental Protection Agency. The 2-story, 152,000-square-foot (14121-m²) administrative and engineering center showcases many of the building systems Butler supplies to non-residential building programs. The MR-24 standing seam metal roof assemblies that incorporate high-performance Skyweb and ThermaLiner insulation systems result in an R value of 20. The R-20 walls were achieved from a mix of masonry with 2 1/2-inch (64-mm) Thermawall and 2 1/2-inch (64-mm) TextureWall wall panel systems. Lighting includes a T-5 system augmented with T-8 lighting in conference rooms and private offices, along with compact fluorescent fixtures in hallways, common areas and the cafeteria. Motion sensors control lighting for interior offices and other areas of intermittent access/egress; low-E glazing and sections of translucent wall panels admit diffused daylight. Six large insulated skylights in the roof also flood the building’s interior staircases and immediate hallways with supplemental daylight. Heating and air-conditioning optimize efficiency from variable-air-volume distribution around the perimeter and by the raised floor that creates a plenum to allow work stations to control the temperature. The facility, which received an Energy Star rating of 81 out of a possible 100, also serves as the North American headquarters for Bluescope Steel Ltd., Butler’s parent company.
